S. boulardii – Probiotic Organisms [01Jan03]
Oct 6th
Which are the best probiotics for Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis? It appears S. bolardii is one of them.

S. boulardii is considered to be a non-pathogenic, non-colonizing baker’s yeast species which is closely related to brewer’s yeast (S. cervesiae). S. boulardii is a unique probiotic in that it is known to survive gastric acidity and is not adversely affected or inhibited by antibiotics or does not alter or adversely affect the normal flora in the bowel. For this reason, other friendly probiotic organisms can be taken at the same time as S. boulardii.
In a study published in a 2003 issue of the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, S. boulardii proved to be helpful in ulcerative colitis. Studies suggest that it also protects the gut from amebas and cholera. In addition, it has proven to alleviate the diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile, Crohn’s disease, and that of other causes. S. boulardii has been found to secrete a protease which digests two protein exotoxins, toxin A and toxin B, which appear to mediate diarrhea and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile.
In Europe, S. boulardii is sold in capsules over-the-counter for the treatment of diarrhea and for preventing and treating various other digestive disorders.Read more at www.innvista.com

PYCNOGENOLS — Are they a super drug? [25Aug10]

This is a person’s testimonial. I’m still left with only questions, but I’ve now stored this for future reference. I need to investigate this web source too.

Pycnogenol is a great product. It has really made a difference in my health. Here’s a brief history… Crohn’s since 1980. On and off drugs. Several flares ups. In the hospital 4 or 5 times. Two years ago, surgery for a brain abcess…. related??? Maybe??? This summer, abdominal surgery for Crohn’s. It was hell but now I am off all meds and feel better than ever. The doctors had me on several things to stop the diarrhea but nothing worked. Then I read about a bacteria called L. Salivaruis. As soon as I stated taking it, the diarrhea stopped. I know it works because if I stop, the diarrhea comes back. I am also taking some digestive enzymes and an anti-oxidant (PYCNOGENOL). This combination is doing wonders for me. Has anyone else experienced these kind of results from products like these. Crohn’s and Colitis are both related to digestion. It just makes sense to me to take products that adi digestion. I wonder why my doctors never mentioned these things. Curious, but excited to be feeling so good again.
